What is the IELTS?

The IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. The IELTS is recognized by 11,000 employers, universities, schools, and immigration bodies around the world, who use the test to assess English language proficiency levels of candidates.

The IELTS is a standardized test that assesses the four different language skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Below is a (very brief!) summary of each section.

Listening: The listening section is about 40 minutes and candidates listen to a series of audios and answer questions based on them.

Reading: The reading section is 1 hour, and candidates read a series of tests and answer questions based on them.

Writing: The writing section is 1 hour, and candidates write two pieces:

  • a text describing visual information (IELTS Academic) / a letter (IELTS General)

  • an essay

Speaking: The reading section is between 11 – 14 minutes, and candidates have an interview with an IELTS examiner.

The best way to tackle the IELTS is first by registering yourself for the test. Once you know exactly when you will be taking it, you can start your preparation!
