Using ChatGPT to Create a Self-Study Learning Plan

I have been using ChatGPT for a variety of practical purposes, from creating lesson plans to teach debating skills, to more wacky things like coming up with fusion recipes that combine Colombian and Indian gastronomy. Whatever it is, ChatGPT is a powerful tool you can use to learn anything. In this short post, I want to share an idea on how to create a self-study learning plan with ChatGPT.

Firstly, what is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is an AI-powered conversational agent or chatbot that uses the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) language model. It is designed to understand and generate human-like responses to text-based conversational inputs, such as questions or prompts. ChatGPT is capable of answering a wide range of questions on various topics. Its responses are generated based on its pre-trained knowledge and understanding of natural language and context.

Whether you want to improve your English, prepare for IB exams, or become proficient in tying knots, ChatGPT can help you structure a learning plan. You can use the following template, and then ask follow-up prompts as necessary to create a solid learning plan that you can use to learn what you want:

I want to learn X. I am willing to put in Y hours every day for the next Z months. Create a learning plan for me so that I can learn X.

  • X – This is what you want to learn. For example, I want to learn Mandarin Chinese. However, that is quite broad! The more specific, the better the learning plan will be. To make what I want to learn clearer, this serves better: “elementary level conversational (spoken) Chinese Mandarin that I can use in social and professional settings”.

  • Y – This is the number of hours you are willing to put in every day. In my case, I plan to put in 1 hour a day.

  • Z – This is the number of months you are willing to put in to learning it. I will put 3 months.

So, my final prompt is the following:

I put this into ChatGPT and this is what it came up with:

I can take it further and ask ChatGPT to go into more detail and provide me with exactly what I should learn each day/hour. Of course, I need to use my own judgement when deciding what to do / not do, but this template provides me with a general structure that I can tweak according to my needs.

I recommend you play around with it and use ChatGPT as a way to constantly learn and grow, personally, academically, professionally and what not!
